| Yes, yes, that was a direct reference to Kermit the Frog.
Seriously
though, we have always been a family that tries to be environmentally
conscience. We recycled before it was cool to recycle. Even when I was
a kid, my brother and I used to haul huge garbage bags of smashed
aluminum cans in to be re-used. Matt, the kids and I have just lived
life with the philosophy of use it until it has no life, recycle it if
you can, don't waste and put a sweater on or get a blanket instead of
turning the heat up.
Last year I stopped buying paper plates
and plastic wear for good. We installed a programmable thermostat in
the house last summer, over 2 years ago we gave away our washer and
dryer to some friends when we moved and once settled here, bought a
front loading High Efficiency washer and dryer. We use a low flow
shower head, buy used whenever possible, shop at the farmers market
here (we have a great one!), buy organic and free range when we can,
and for a while have been using mostly non-toxic cleaners and personal
hygiene products. This is one of the best moves we've been able to
make. Matt walked into the house yesterday after I'd spent the day
cleaning with my new stock of cleaning stuff (previously I'd still been
holding on to chlorine bleach, but no more) and said "wow! you can
really tell a difference in the air with all the non-toxic stuff!"
While
thats just some of the stuff we've being doing, I want to say we don't
do it because it's cool, trendy or in. We do it because there is direct
scientific research that all the toxins we use to "clean" or keep our
foods pest free or make animals grow, actually harms us. With my
family's history of cancer, I don't need to fight more than just my
genes to stay healthy. Another reason, we really do feel like it's our
responsibility to not use and abuse our environment. We are not tree
huggers. We do feel though that beyond a social responsibility, we were
given the earth as our home and we should respect that gift, no matter
what bible beaters might say about the earths end being near. I can't
imagine the blatant abuse of the earth being a the good stewards that
God has told us to be. Worship the earth, no, protect and respect, yes.
So now that I've gotten all philosophical and theological, whats next for us?
1. reusable shopping and produce bags. no more plastic, even though we recycle, why not just go reusable? 2.
purchasing green power from our power company. For our family of 5, $28
more a month and we are running on green power! Just $8 a month is like
not driving your car for 4 month, imagine what $28 is like. 3.
buying local. We do this anyway when produce we like is in season, but
we are going to try harder to buy meat, eggs, and other things as local
as possible. 4. buying organic cotton and other materials. As I said
before we buy organic when we can, but sometimes clothing is over
looked, although I do own a bit of organic clothing. 5. compact
fluorescent bulbs. Yes this is an easy one, but matt hated how the
light from them looked when they first came out. I've had to work on
this one. 6. I'm giving up bottled water. Yes I recycle the bottles,
but I can drink tap water thats been filtered. I'll be ok. (can you
tell I'm still wondering if I'll be ok with this?)
There are
goals beyond that, none that are obtainable now. we plan to eventually
build a completely green house out of shipping containers. Yes yes, you
are thinking I am crazy now. Do a google search and tell me they aren't
the coolest houses you've ever seen. We want a gray water system, solar
panels on the flat roof, recycled everything inside. Thats a ways a way
though. I want a hybrid, however a prius is out of the budget right now
and not going to work with 3 kids in carseats. Hopefully there will be
a minivan or SUV that just as good as a prius in the future.
So
now that I appear like a crazy nut, I'm going to go finish my chocolate
soy milk shake and get back to living life instead of typing about it.
| So I have a couple vents.
1. why is it so hard to find jeans that fit? Pre-kids I have some great ones, but then again, what doesn't fit when your a size 0 with absolutely no hips, and a very nice high rear. Now, thanks to my 3 hellions, I mean angels, I'm a little more curvy, and my rear is a little lower, and while not a tiny 0, more like a 4, jeans don't fit correctly. The best ones I've found to date, Gap long and leans, leave me wanting more from my denim. My first complaint is the fact that they fit in the store when I try them on, then I get home and wear them for a few hours and they are way way way too large. I'm a newly discovered 5'6" (that another rant later on), so not anywhere near being short. Yet I buy short length (because unlike mens pants, we women don't get to choose from innumerable inseams, we have 3, short, regular and long), and they work with heels that are 2.5 inches. I wear them with flats and if I don't wash them in hot and put them in the drier on high heat for an hour, they grow to be too long. Then there is the fact that for some reason that I can't figure out the front part is huge. Like I should have a bear belly to tuck into it, which I don't, because frankly I'm more of a fruity girly drink or straight shots kid of girl. Bear is gross, and yes I've tried to like it. While I enjoy the fact that my stomach isn't large and doesn't deserve a nickname, I don't like the way the saggy front looks. Then there's the rear. Out of the dryer or in the store, fits perfect. And hour later a little loose, by the end of the day I look like my rear has deflated due to all the sag. Apparently, according to fashion experts I should buy jeans that are too tight but I can still zip. Well thats all good, but I don't really want to have to wake up early to stretch out my jeans because they are so tight I can't sit in them to drive anywhere. Can't someone just make jeans that fit me?
2. I found out that the 5'5" I'd been quoting to everyone as my height is incorrect. I'm actually 5'6". So everything that states my height is wrong. Not that it's a big deal, but it annoys me. I haven't been measured since I was 17 and well it never occurred to me I would probably grow a little more.
3. honestly I can't remember three. It must have not been nearly as important to world peace as #1.
4. this one is actually not a vent. I'm proud to say that I lost all my baby weight from teddy. I also have been running several times a week and I'm able to do 2.5 miles now. I really enjoy my runs and was so dedicated that over the weekend on an out of state trip I woke up early, and even though it was 40 degrees and pouring rain I went running. Yes, I am awesome.
Well thats all for today folks. I'm sure your relieved. Your probably asking yourself why you even read this inane rambling and why you are still reading. Yes, your starting to think about how much time you just wasted and how you could have cleaned out your ear wax, trimmed your nose hair, or maybe cleaned out your fishes bowl. You know the one that is sitting there floating upside down because you've neglected it due to spending out your time reading blogs that have no real meaning or contribution to the greater good. Oh yes, now you remember him that poor neglected fish.

And my favorite comment when this picture was shown to a group of moms, "wouldn't you be so pissed if you bought your daughter that dress for prom and she came home with like, half of it missing????"
Yes people, it's a condom dress. If your not laughing, get a sense of humor.
| I have been forced to slow down from the last few crazy months, unfortunately it is not in the form of a vacation or relaxing spa trip as I would have much preferred. Instead our house hold has been graced with the presence of the influenza virus. Nate apparently brought it home from school. From him Reese got it, then I contracted it. Some how though the kids only had fevers and were really tired, at which point I didn't even think flu. However when I got it my first symptoms were feeling like I couldn't stand up I was so tired and aching like someone had beat with with a baseball bat. Sitting up to get a drink was so incredibly painful I just didn't. Of course there was the fever and chills, headache and some mild chest pain, oh boy! So now I'm not so achy I can't sit and type, but I'm too achy to do anything that needs to be done. I'd honestly rather just sleep, but my other two monsters need attending to.
So on to a quick update. We are planning to move again and actually follow through with it. Hopefully as of next week our house will have an official offer, we are just waiting on the people to be able to walk through the house without fear of catching the flu. Aside from that nothing really interesting to report.
